The Role and Impact of Diverse Representations in Television
Importance of Studying Representations
It is essential to study representations of race, gender, and sexual orientation on television because this immense reach among millions daily arguably makes it one of the most influential forms of media. By studying how different groups are represented, we can perceive ideas being portrayed about them and, consequently, their possible effects on shaping viewers' ideas about these groups.
Television also provides information and guidance. Accurate representations can engender empathy and raise awareness in viewers, including proper, positive, and diverse representation (Hidalgo-Ciudad, 2022). For example, shows like "Pose," which features a majority LGBTQ+ cast in their show and touches on issues affecting the community, have been highly praised for their accurate representation and for just bringing these societal controversies into the public eye.
Stereotypical Portrayals
History has it that television perpetuated stereotypical portrayals of the different races, sexes, and sexual orientations. One such stereotype is portraying the African American men as a criminal or gangster (Walker & Winlock, 2023). Programs such as "Cops" and numerous crime dramas present Black men in these roles all the time, thereby reverting to the stereotypical idea that an African American man is intrinsically violent or a criminal. Such portrayal can become racial profiling and stereotypes in the reality of life, where the youth audience receives such images and takes them within them to associate African American males with threats or criminals.
Another common stereotype is the portrayal of women, usually in occupations that either emphasize their appearance or sexualize them. For example, the plot of most female rescue workers in "Baywatch" relates to making them look appealing to men by highlighting their physical appearance rather than personal or professional matters (Sydney, 2023). It harms the young girls watching these shows, leaving an impression that their worth is in their bodies rather than their abilities and brains.
