Effects of Violent Television on Children
Sarah Sopekan, Olayinka Samson Alade, and Mary Uchechukwu Ignatius-Ihejirika gathered quantitative data using a survey. They collected data from questionnaires and analyzed it using descriptive statistics of percentages and frequency counts (Sopekan, Alade, & Ignatius-Ihejirika, 2020).
The primary purpose of the study was to determine how violent television cartoon programs influenced children’s social behavior. In that light, the participants in the study were 100 parents. In particular, 18 were males, and 82 were females. Based on the age, 31 were from 21 to 30 years, 44 from 31 to 40 years, and 25 from 41 to 50 years (Sopekan, Alade, & Ignatius-Ihejirika, 2020).
The independent variable in the study was violent cartoon programs. In contrast, the dependent variable was the rate of violence in children who watched violent cartoons frequently. Variables were operationalized through the data that parents provided in the questionnaires. For example, participants were required to record the frequency in which their children watched violent cartoon programs daily, weekly, or monthly (Sopekan, Alade, & Ignatius-Ihejirika, 2020).
