Speech Presentation
Introduction
The goal of this presentation is to speak to nursing students at Chamberlain College of Nursing on non-verbal communication and its significance. Accordingly, the audience is set to benefit by learning how to communicate efficiently. Although verbal communication is critical for success in passing a message across, non-verbal communication, including facial expressions, posture, eye contact, gestures, and tone of voice are also important in realizing more clarity in the message being sent. Correspondingly, non-verbal communication complements and reinforces what is spoken, thus making interaction more meaningful, albeit with the influence of several factors. Therefore, while non-verbal communication has great significance, it is essential to consider factors including non-verbal behavior, the social context, and the interaction between the message sender and receiver or interpreter, which influences the non-verbal communication process and message interpretation.
Significance of Non-Verbal Communication
The non-verbal communication topic is a crucial aspect of communication. The ability to communicate well does not solely depend on the words used but also on the non-verbal cues. According to Mahmud (2014), the body language portrayed when communicating with anyone determines how well the message is received. Non-verbal communication cannot be ignored in any form of communication since the gestures, postures, tone, and even eye contact relay a powerful message. The body language of a person may hinder or facilitate how a message is delivered. Therefore, nonverbal behaviors can put people at ease and draw them towards the communicator or can offend and confuse them (Vijayavalsalan, 2012). Nonverbal communication does not only serve to share the message but also reveal the emotions of the communicator. The manner of communication indicates how truthful one is or whether they are good listeners or not. When nonverbal communication is properly enhanced, clarity is maintained, and there is reduced tension and confusion in the conversation.
Presumably, the topic of non-verbal communication is essential for students precisely because they need to learn how to appropriately pass information without necessarily having to rely on words (Scott, 2018). In particular, nursing students who will end up working in hospital settings need to understand the significance of non-verbal cues as they will determine how well they will interact with their patients to ensure the best treatment outcomes. Accordingly, what comes from the mouth needs to be in sync with the body language to pass information effectively. Notably, when that does not occur, the listener gets confused about whether to follow verbal or the non-verbal message, which creates mistrust in them. Therefore, misunderstandings are bound to be encountered when parties conversing non-verbally do not correctly interpret the signals they exchange with each other. On the contrary, proper non-verbal skills will ensure that expression becomes easy hence enabling a better connection between the message sender and the recipient, which builds strong relationships (Bolotova, 2013).
Factors Influencing the Non-Verbal Communication Process
Communication does not only occur when one is talking but also continues when the conversation stops. It follows that non-verbal communication takes over when one stops talking and thus complements or reinforces what was being said. This ensures that the intended message is passed more efficiently. However, certain factors impede the nonverbal communication process, and they include non-verba...
