Invention of computers and internet has made the world a global village. This has been an historical landmark in the field of communication industry across the world. According to the Oxford dictionary, Internet can be defined as arrangement of computers, which are linked together letting the users across the globe to exchange data. It is approximated that today, 33% of the world’s population have access to the internet, Ronald and Barbara (2002). Internet provides a more reliable and powerful source of entertainment and presents itself as a reliable learning tool.
Further, in today’s global village internet services has become the most effective and cheap tool in business management and operations. The World Wide Web and e-mail provides the principal to internet services worldwide. According to Jifeng, Alice and Benjamin (2005), Internet can be allayed as a global meeting place where people across the globe are able to meet concurrently. This can be possible through Google, and yahoo for research, shopping at eBay and chatting with friends and relatives through facebook or Skype among others. However, every invention has its merits and demerits. Never the less internet services merits surpasses the demerits hence can be considered better off rather than worse off.
The advantages of Internet
All through the years, internet has provided services to mankind. This is due to the following merits;
Access to information: This is important benefit to mankind due to the development of internet and its ability to offer information to him. According to Ronald and Barbara (2002), internet offers valuable and reliable information for researchers and students. These are available at the research websites like Google or Yahoo.
Communication: internet has offered a quick and cheap communication channel across the globe. This field has been utilized extremely well, though much needs to be done to increase its reliability and access in some parts. Internet has made it possible for people who are far away to communicate (Jifeng, Alice and Benjamin, 2005).
Entertainment: internet has acted as a source of entertainment especially for the youth. It offers a wide variety of entertainment content like movies, music, games, news and others
E-commerce: E-commerce has become the most reliable tool for business management and operations. According to Davidson (1997), internet offers a commercial strategy for transmission of business information or data across the globe. E-commerce has made shopping for items across the world possible without travelling to the market, and also the use of credit cards (Jifeng, Alice and Benjamin 2005).
