The movie Barbara directed by Christian Petzold contains elements of ostalgie. According to Hyland, the public opinion declares that ostalgie denotes the oppressive nature of laws, restricted boarders, controlled borders and culture by the state from the days of Germany Democratic Republic (GDR).
