Listening and Feedback
Listening is a skill and like any skill, the more you practice good habits, the better you get. Of course, it is also easier to listen to others when messages are crafted with the audience in mind.
For this discussion, please respond to the following:
For each of the types of listening (informational, critical, and empathic), discuss one skill that you currently use to be an effective listener.
Identify a listening skill that you could improve upon to be a more effective listener and describe the potential effect it will have on your listening skills.

In critical listening, the speaker is committed to persuading me; therefore, I aim to appraise the speaker’s credibility and message. In order to be an effective critical listener, I use research skills by evaluating the speaker’s statements before making a decision, especially when they are not readily accessible for interactions. Information listening is necessary when the speaker wants to share information; thus, I aim to understand the information. Taking detailed notes is a great skill to become an effective informational listener because it allows for knowledge gathering in order to understand the subject matter. In empathic listening, my goal is to listen with empathy and grasp the subject matter from the speaker’s reference frame. Avoiding and judging responses is a great skill for an effective empathic listener (Hamilton et al., 2019).
