Now and then companies are faced with unforeseen events which may interrupt operations or paralyze the company. In many cases the department held responsible for this is the crisis management department. It is tasked with observing and reporting potential harm and taking the necessary steps to avoid. In case something happens it has the responsibility of cleaning up the mess that happened. The case of taco bell can be a good example where a crisis has occurred, and the necessary steps have been taken. The outbreak of E-coli in the northeastern part of the United States infected a total of 71 individuals and claimed the lives of 2. At the beginning of the outbreak company officials were incorrectly and unknowingly blamed the green onions used in the preparation of meals. The truth was that it was caused by the lettuce that is grown by farmers in central California. The outbreak in November 2014 but was recognized by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December of the same year. In the weeks following the incident, the company was applying damage control to try and ease the situation.
