With the increased technological advancement, communication in the workplace is becoming easy and efficient. Besides, computer-mediated communication has enhanced effective decision-making and business growth. Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is a communication process where two or more individuals interact using different computers and internet connections (Pang et al., 2018). Most CMC approaches are becoming significant in the business world due to digitalization. CMC is known for anonymity, persistence, and synchronicity, which is useful for organization safety and decision making. Therefore, technology has become a crucial part of the organization and provides a better medium for message transmission and workplace interaction. The journal entry addresses computer-mediated communication or software trends and the existing opportunity for my company Berkshire Hathaway.
Computer-Mediated Communication Trends
The main software products and CMCs trends are Social Intranet, Slack, and Zoom. The Social Intranet is one of the communication trends with the primary function of allowing organizations to promote collaboration and engagement in the workplace (Mergel, 2016). The Social Intranet is a software product that establishes a better communication channel for the employees. The key advantages are efficiency and time management. The Social Intranet also allows the employees to easily contribute to various discussions. It can also be combined with other content management tools. The major disadvantages of the Social Intranet are data security and dependent on transmission bandwidth.
On the other hand, Slack is a software product that is strictly used in the workplace for efficient communication. Slack is a messaging platform that an organization designs to allow employees to communicate, collaborate and provide feedback (Lin et al., 2016). The advantages are similar to Zoom and Social Intranet, such as increased efficiency and time consciousness. However, Slack also promotes direct messaging and persistent chat rooms. The major disadvantage of Slack is strict management and high power consumption. The last trending platform is Zoom. Zoom is a communication platform that relies on videotelephony software and is used majorly for video conferences (Zoom, 2022). Zoom has many advantages; for instance, it creates a virtual interaction platform between managers and employees. Zoom is also efficient and allows information to reach the employees at ago. The major disadvantage of Zoom is cyber security and data loss whenever hackers access the company meetings. Therefore, Zoom, Social Intranet, and Slack make communication efficient; however, they have a common security risk of data loss.
