Understanding the different things that cause media bias is important for any journalist. It allows him to be able to plan and evaluate how to cover particular news in the most objective way possible. Nonetheless, one must also be aware that each kind of bias could not be removed in a report. Due to a variety of internal and external circumstances, news reports would always lean towards one point of view. In this paper, the author would try to identify the kind of bias that exists in the article written by Avlon (2020) entitled ‘Trump is the Anti-Lincoln’. Based on an analysis of the whole article, the author believes that this piece of news is a clear example of affective and ideological bias at the same time.
News Bias
One of the main things that point out to the overtly affective bias of the news article is the way the author described Trump. In most objective pieces of news, the author would only describe the main character using their name, position, or any other information that is not prone to any misinterpretation. In this news, however, Avlon (2020) described Trump as the most “cynical and shallow national politician”. Aside from these blunt hits towards Trump’s political character, Avlon also attacked Trump’s and his father’s personalities. On the one hand, he described the President as “a demagogue who demonizes his opponents and tries to divide the country for political gain” CITATION Avl20 \l 1033 (Avlon, 2020).
