The Abu Dhabi Government formed Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) in 2006; it is one of the greatest ports developers, trading and logistics sector, industrial sector and providing other related services. Propelling economic expansion by establishing the firm establishment of modern infrastructure, real estate and business services in Abu Dhabi is its main aim. In today`s global economy Information Technology (IT) has undoubtedly emerged as an important driving force; it is a key to a firm`s competitiveness. In the recent past, following the success of ADPC, the IT team has started analyzing and formulating policies to find out how ADPC`s power in software and the proliferation of IT can aid in developing a powerful company. The company has gone through several different stages of change and development. Due to IT, there has been evolution of business strategies in ADPC; it has changed the strategies of business from labor and manual skills to the approach of knowledge management. The social system of ADPC changed how tasks and work was being done after the introduction of information technology.
Based on IT's vision to serve ADPC business needs and its strategic plan to enhance and develop all existing IT Services within ADPC corporate, the history of ADPC`s IT sector from 2006 is discussed below. In 2006, ADPC had one site, which was also the headquarter and had not yet effected an IT sector. Later, Bechtel (A project management consultant) established IT in ADPC.
Bechtel was to help ADPC in the developing KPIZ with the core responsibility of management and co-ordination of fundamental planning, design, and construction of the port and related infrastructure issues. In addition, development of the construction strategy and development segmentation and control of the development master program were among the services Bechtel was to undertake. IT services were delivered and provided from Injazat Data Systems, a renowned market leader for Information Technology sector in the region but IT director was from Injazat.
In the year 2007, Injazat started providing ADPC with numerous solutions, which ranged from IT administration of infrastructure security, blackberry infrastructure administration, telecommunications, IT telephony and networking. Injazat was a major IT company in the UAE and ADPC found it worth to partner with them in IT issues. Injazat Data Systems was formed early 2005 and it was an Information Technology and business services company that offered to their customers many outsourcing services.
Its focus was on providing numerous IT and business process services to the oil and gas, financial services, transportation, telecommunications, governmental sectors and healthcare departments. Mubadala Development Company and Electronic Data Systems (EDS) were partners who had formed Injazat as a joint venture, an international Information Technology and huge business processes firm. Two years after Injazat`s formation, it was among three IT service providers in the UAE hence attracting leading public and private organizations to be beneficiaries of its quality services.
By 2008 ADPC had single rack for servers that contained five servers, and a single rack for network servers, all managed by Injazat. Their servers were installed with standalone applications with less than ten IT core services. The company had less than seven IT employees; first person in IT was hired as an IT Director for ADPC followed by more employees for managing servers, service desk, IT Telephony, GIS and so on in addition to overlooking servers for Injazat. Later, localization started and this created the need for the increase in the number of IT employees. The idea to move Injazat arose and hence this led to the building of an IT sector structure.
From 2009, Injazat had already moved and had no affiliation with ADPC. The number of IT employees was more than thirty-five and it had transformed from an outsourced model to an in-house IT department. Growth was inevitable and the department was providing IT services to 10 ports and 8 sites. It had started managing new strategies on how to provide IT services to external entities. It was running two agreements with different consultants in order to enhance IT services: MDS for service desk support and Fujitsu for applications, implementations and support. It started by building a new Data Center in a land (39,414,460) sqm for Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad), (6,367,736) sqm for onshore port, and (3,684,122) sqm offshore port area. A heart was needed to make all the technology, communication, authorization and more to beat, "Khalifa Data Centre" was built as a state of the art centre on 9036sqm.
In 2011, Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) chose Cisco for the implementation of Cisco Borderless Network and Collaboration solutions for Phase 1 of its Khalifa Port Special Systems project. The main point for the operation was to enable ADPC in building a safe and sound trustworthy platform to deliver services across Khalifa Port in addition to the industrial zone; Kizad eventually. In the fundamental agreement, Cisco was to assist in the creation of new service schemes and initiatives, majorly focusing on the alignment of ADPC`s ICT (information and communication technology) approach and goals with Cisco's superior technologies.
This was intended to assist ADPC to become a leading company in terms of technological updates and market transformations so th...
