Action learning is an approach for individual development as well as organisation development where work is set based on bringing people experiences on the problems at hand together to tackle and explore the possible solutions to those problems. Participants in action learning learn from their fellow members in the group and try to solve portions of the problem by reflecting the shared ideas in the group. Action learning has its root in adult learning and organisational development (Noe, 2010).
Chapter 9 of Employee Training and Development by Raymond A. Noe deals with employee development. In this chapter, Raymond states that leadership and team building can be developed through action learning. Action learning plays an important role in increasing the knowledge capacity of group members in order for them to accomplish their goals. According to this article, successful team building encompasses various requirements such as helping team members to understand their overall purpose, identify their individual responsibilities, establish a communication means, and in the establishment of procedures for decision-making and problems solving (Noe, 2010). The author states that action learning meets these requirements, as team members are responsible to their own engagement as well as understanding and implementing those requirements.
