An effective and sustainable supply chain is the root of a functioning business. This supply chain enables a company to achieve timely and quality deliverables to consumers as well as optimum cost and investment, thus gaining a competitive edge (Sanders, 2020). One favorite company that has thrived through supply chain management is Starbucks, a renowned global coffee retailer and coffeehouse chain headquartered in Seattle, Washington. The company uses a vertically integrated supply chain, meaning it is involved in every supply chain process, from sourcing to manufacturing to logistics to distribution (Chen & Liang, 2021). The vertically integrated supply chain allows Starbucks to work directly with its global coffee growers to deliver quality products while reducing costs and environmental impacts. Ownership of the entire supply chain guarantees quality and makes the organization less vulnerable to significant disruptions like worker shortages and overplanting.
