Part 1
The global operation of Rogers Engineering and Manufacturing have recently been questionable in the light of ethical violations and minimal to no adherence to the company’s corporate culture, ethics in the workplace and diversity training for the entire organization. The particular scenario for this regrettable concern is when the REM regional manager and the regional sales manager had their responsibilities terminated due to ethical violation during the activation of a very large contract with a potential client from Sub-Saharan Africa. The scenario has called for the development of code of conduct for the global operations of the company covering its actions as vendors, alliance partners and customer relations.
The company has the mission and organizational objective of serving its customers and employees with integrity and honesty. This is widely used in defining and developing its code of conduct and approach to ethics. In order to fully develop it, I will review the code of ethics written by two of the company’s employees and then compare my ideas and those of the select employees with the code of business ethics of another company, in this case, the Coca Cola Company. The title for the code of conduct will be:
The Way We Conduct Ourselves at Rogers Engineering and Manufacturing.
Acting with Integrity in Our Operations around the Globe.
The reasons for the development of this code of conduct owes to its importance in our company and its global operations. The code is important because a good reputation supports and improves our ability to do business and build lasting relationships with our customers that are required for our success (Buzatu, 2015). The code ensures that operates with utmost trust and confidence for our employees, customers, potential clients, stakeholders and the community in which we operate our business. Thirdly, it is our goal not only to carry out our operations successfully, but also touch the lives of the people that come in contact with us and this is done with a defined, elaborate and standard code of conduct (Buzatu, 2015).
The code of conduct should be followed by the employees of the firm and the board members. Failure to do so will result in a disciplinary action which includes termination of employment. Moreover, the code of conduct is written for Rogers Engineering and Manufacturing, its members of the board and employees and, therefore, we expect REM contractors, consultants and any other individual or group that may be assigned to work with the company to adhere to the values stated in the code, in compliance with their activities in our company (Wu et al., 2015). Failure of a REM contractor, consultant or temporary worker to follow the code of conduct will result in termination of the contract, service or relationship with us. The following are the core values that monitor our global operations in the company:
* Professional Integrity- At Rogers Engineering and Manufacturing, it is our belief that there should be ultimate demonstration of integrity in ethical situations during our operations in the workplace (Buzatu, 2015). This core value is important as it ensures that our employees act with utmost truth and reliability in treating our customers, stakeholders and coworkers with respect.
* Professionalism- Professional behaviors should always be presented in the company. This includes learning every aspect of one’s job and performing it to the best of their abilities while maintaining the requirements of the responsibility in order to obtain high-quality results (Wu et al., 2015). This core value is important as it will aid in eliminating certain instances of racism, gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the company.
* Accountability- Every individual working with REM should always be ready to take responsibility for their actions in the workplace (Buzatu, 2015). The core value will lead to the success and prosperity of the company because it ensures that all employees, regardless of seniority work for the common goal and are accountable for their actions in the process.
* Privacy, security and freedom of expression- Our employees at REM should always comply with the code of the company’s privacy and security. This implies that information about the company’s financial situation, new product development processes, proposed acquisition, government investigation, should be kept confidential by the employees, the board, contractors, consultants and temporary service providers (Johnson, 2019). Moreover, these employees are granted the freedom of expression in airing their views about what needs to be done to improve the efficiency of the company.
After its design, an effective code of conduct is essentially characterized by the presence of mechanisms that ensure its implementation (Hardy, 2016). These include activities set up and revised by the organization to foster the knowledge and ensure complete adherence of the code. In REM, such activities include:
* Ethics training- I will carry out ethical training on all employees of the REM Company in order to enable them identify and devise ways to deal with ethical problems that are developing within the institution (Hardy, 2016). This training will also help them fully understand and apply the above core values stated in the code of conduct.
* Appointment of an Ethics and Compliance Officer- There will be appointed an ethics and compliance officer who will be tasked with the responsibility of designing and maintaining a reliable and effective ethical programme for the company (Hardy, 2016).
* Creation of a notification mechanism- In the company, there will be appointed a group of three individuals whose task will be to keep an eye on employees, stakeholders and other service providers in the company and then report their unethical activities or warn them (Hardy, 2016).
* Creation of an Ethical Auditing Function- The Company will have a group of trained individuals who will internally evaluate the auditing activities of the employees in certain departments like the financial and management in order to examine them for the nature of their operations in accordance to the company ethics (Hardy, 2016)
