Reverse and forward logistics are becoming strategic demands of the new world supply chain that balances organizational efficiency with sustainability. Whereas forward logistics involves the movement of goods between the origin and the consumption point, reverse logistics involves the movement of goods in the opposite direction, reusing, remaking, or destroying them to create a closed-loop system that achieves the greatest recovery of resources and least waste. This paper will discuss what these two logistics streams have in common: transportation, inventory management, information systems, and customer service, and how these factors can influence the performance of the entire supply chain and environmental sustainability.
Common Elements Between Forward and Reverse Logistics
Introduction
Forward logistics refers to the flow of products between the production stage and the ultimate consumer, including production, transportation, warehousing, and delivery to the consumer to satisfy the market demand. Conversely, reverse logistics is the movement of products in the reverse direction, that is, the product flow first to the consumer and then back to the producer to support the activities of returns management, product reuse, recycling, and responsible disposal. They are both important elements of the current supply chain strategy, as they help achieve customer satisfaction, control costs, and sustainability, and assist a company in establishing a competitive advantage. Where forward logistics aims to add value to the customer, reverse logistics aims to retrieve or reduce losses due to returned or end-of-life products.
