Abstract
Improved technology in the recent past has brought about better and efficient transportation and communication thus enabling businesses to expand into foreign countries. Internationalization and globalization opens new opportunities and benefits to businesses through improved economies of scale, new markets/customers and avoiding local competition amongst other business benefits. Foreign expansion is an expensive undertaking in terms of costs and human resources involved. Effective decisions and consultations among various organizational leaders should be made with caution to avoid losses and to ensure that the business remain profitable and enjoy considerable competitive advantage over its competitors.

Various considerations with regard to expansion costs, operational costs, marketing costs as well as staff salaries and benefits should be put in place. Foreign expansion may be in the form of acquisition or partnership among other strategies. Foreign acquisition requires various team leaders within an organization to carry out proper market research with regard to the pros and cons of acquisition. Acquisition procedures, priorities and roles to be played by various individuals should be spelt out. During expansion the Human Resource should go beyond its traditional role of staffing, training, appraising, rewarding and promoting the staff into a more important role in terms of change management to influence how a business operates.
Acquisitions create a dynamic setting for the HR function to change its own role (Hancock, 2010). Through foreign acquisitions businesses find themselves operating in dynamic and uncertain environments. HR roles and functions in an organization during change include employee advocate, human capital developer, functional expert, strategic planner and HR leader.
HR should care, listen and respond to the employees feelings during change. HR should also focus to develop plans that offer the employees opportunities to grow and develop future abilities through continuous learning.
