Doing what is right is not similar to doing what customers want. Instead, it is cutting through the bureaucracy as opposed to leaving customers yelling at faceless corporations. According to Max Weber, bureaucracy is a rational way to organize a complex business as an embedment of formalization (Serpa & Ferreira, 2019). This paper examines bureaucratic organizational structure as it relates to the case of United Airlines.
While a bureaucratic organizational structure in an airline has a lot of criticism, it has some advantages. They include accountability, predictability, structure, and job security. It is also based on impersonal relationships that discourage favoritism. In such an organizational structure, every party involved has a chance to succeed. Airlines depend on standardized policies and procedures that help maintain control and uniformity.
Despite bureaucracy being perceived as a massive system of rules and regulations, responsibility and accountability are vital competencies that are required. Employees within such an airline structure possess high education levels and are more self-directed more open-minded. They majorly focus on the general good compared to employees in other types of organizational structures. The bureaucratic structure in an airline discourages favoritism as the impersonal relationships create and emphasize equal benefits. Therefore, friendships do not interfere with the outcome created. There is political pressure that comes with good performance consistently. This creates a starting line where individuals have equal chances of succeeding. It is, thus, more manageable for one to fit into a bureaucratic culture as opposed to other flatter structures. This is because airlines have rules and regulations that give clear job instructions for employee’s roles and expectations.
