Leadership Styles of Mike Duke Walmart CEO
Introduction
Mike Duke is the current CEO and president of Wal-Mart stores company which is a leading retail market in the world (Copeland, Copeland & Labuski, 2013). As an employee of this company I have come to understand some of his leadership styles which have set him apart from leaders of other companies. Through his able leadership, Wal-Mart has continued to expand and compete favorably with other leading retail companies. This paper makes an analysis of leadership styles of Mike Duke who happens to be my current employer.
Empowering employees
Duke empowers his employees by giving them a chance to participate in decision making. He has achieved this through enabling the employee to give feedback on how the company's operations should be improved (Meyer, 2012). Employees with good ideas get a chance to forward their thoughts to Duke; who implements them if they are viable. This availability and one-on-one interaction has empowered employees who results in working harder.
Character traits
In making work proceed as planned, Duke uses an authoritarian approach. To make his employees have positive response, he explains to them the importance of achieving laid objectives. As a result, the employees have come to understand him that there is nothing that can prevent him from making sure what he wants done has been done.
Transformational leadership style
Duke is a transformational leader because he is able to inspire his subjects to follow his vision. The employees are always willing to achieve company's interests in place of their own interests (Haque, 2011). Giving fine details of the objectives set, makes it easy for employees to carry out their activities with focused efforts.
