The Spellmans should continue working from home to hold on to their business's informality. Working from home provides the feeling of not being in a formal environment. It eliminates fear and inspires creativity (Walker, 2003). The Spellmans should also focus on working with their staff from home. They can communicate with them on the phone to ensure their orders are filled on time. What they should avoid doing is moving their business into an office. They will have to divide their operation into various departments in an office. The result is a repetition of the bureaucratic process they used to work under as bank executives.
One of the lessons they should take from their banking experience is good customer service. Banks are known for their excellent customer service. Customer service ensures the seller retains customer loyalty (Picken, 2017). As a start-up, Spellman Gardens needs loyal customers. In addition to this, they need to attract new customers daily. The way to do this is by applying good customer service. Another lesson they could take from their banking experience is offering credit. Banks are lenders, and as such, a majority of their clients are borrowers. In business, entrepreneurs are also likely to encounter buyers who often need to buy goods on credit. Good business practice dictates that goods can always be offered on credit as long as the buyer is creditworthy (Picken, 2017). Therefore, in growing their business, the Spellmans should not shy away from credit buyers as these individuals could become loyal customers in the long run.
