This is a review of several topics under the history subject so far this semester. These are the answers for the assignments from week 1 to week 6.
Q1. The Indians and Kwakiutl tribes of Northwest region of America used to practice giving as a way of increasing one’s status as a generous person in the society (O’Neil, 2008). The cultural practice known as potlatch involved people visiting each other. The host would give the visitor a variety of goods such as food, clothing, money, fish oil, cereals, canoes, slaves, and blankets. The practice helped to mark important events such as childbirth, weddings, and initiation ceremonies. Giving enabled people to practice generosity, glue social bonds, and encourage tribal unity (O’Neil, 2008).
Q2. The Europeans arrival in America affected the natives immensely. They saw themselves superior to other tribes and enforced themselves to the lands owned by the Indians. The Europeans also tried to colonize and Christianize the Indians and Africans. The Europeans established trading systems, agricultural lands, and settlements, which required a lot of labor; Africans became slaves who would work in their farms (Zagarri, 2010). They also brought diseases that were new to Indians, which massively wiped out their population. The Europeans further killed wild animals and fell down trees to clear lands for farming (Whitehead, 2010). The Europeans came to America as settlers, missionaries, and traders. They therefore traded or robbed the local communities’ artifacts, gold, animals, and lands (Ushistory.org). The resisting tribes were put to slavery.
Q3. The growth and establishment of Virginia and New England differed in many ways. First, the New England was the first colony to have self-government where the settlers had power to make laws. Virginia House of Burgesses, however, treated all men equally and gave representatives power to make laws (Zagarri, 2010). Virginia was known for growing tobacco while in New England, ship building, lumbering and merchant-trading was common. This means more economical activities happened in New England (Fisher, 1995). The growth of Virginia was slow due to constant Indian attacks, death from diseases and quarrels.
