The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) is an accounting framework used to measure performance by going beyond the traditional measures of sustainability and performance to include three dimensions namely social, environmental and financial. The fact that this frameworks includes ecological (environmental) and social measures makes it different from traditional means of measurement. The three TBL dimensions are also referred to as the three Ps meaning people, planet and profits. The TBL framework was coined by John Elkington who introduced the sustainability concept as "triple bottom line," in the mid-1990s.
