A wide range of issues affecting women in the labor market revolve around the issue of women being recognized and probably standardized as men at the same level. Due to this big problem in the industry, there are scholars who have come up with possible solutions. From her review of “Women Challenging Unions”, it is clear that Linda Briskin does not support the separate organization notion of women’s way of challenging the structures that disadvantage them. This paper critiques her opinion that separate organization may create a group that is not autonomous and which may not integrate with the whole labor sector (Brigden, 1997).
In the scope of leadership union, separate union is considered as a form of activism. This is due to the empowerment, mobilization and democratization strategies used to drive these groups of activists (Brigden, 1997). Traditional methods of organizing do not draw a parallel on the support of the key elements of a separatist movement. A separatist movement selects its member on the basis of those in support of the idea of separation which does not necessarily happen to other mainstream organizations.
In the 1960s through to the 1970s, women unionists experienced tension when they tried to reshape the union away from the hitherto patriarchal system as they tried to form a more feminist system. Many opponents felt that the system could create a system that would make the women more marginalized in the unions.
