While coaching and mentoring share some similarities, the two concepts are different from one another. One difference is that coaching focuses on the task at hand, while mentoring focuses more on the person (Chakravarthy, 2011). The coach seeks to help the individual learn the skills, behavior, and attitude required to accomplish tasks. As pointed out by Kopp (2014), coaching tends to be performance-based. The task in the case of coaching is well-defined, and as informed by Chakravarthy (2011), the conversation is characterized by specific timelines and clear focus. Mentoring, on the other hand, directs attention to the individual and is characterized by work-life conversation. As highlighted by Kopp (2014), unlike coaching, task-driven mentoring tends to be more relationship-based.
