In September 1980, SaferWay health food store owners merged forces with owners of Clarksville Natural Grocery, and this merger resulted in the first Whole Foods store in Austin, which was initially more significant than a standard health food store and offered a broader food selection (Palmer, 2021). A devoted customer base has helped maintain Whole Foods market despite facing early adversities, including a flash flood that damaged their uninsured building. As the company grew, John Mackey took the helm of Whole Foods. He prompted its expansion beyond Texas, starting with acquiring the Whole Foods Company of New Orleans in 1988 (Stone, 2022).
