Our organization’s diversity standards emphasize the need to advocate for an inclusive and ethnically and racially diverse workplaces. In the past three years, our goal as an organization has been to build a culture where individual difference is respected and where everyone regardless of age, job group, color, nationality, or race is not only treated equally but also has access to the same opportunities. Clearly, the benefits of developing an inclusive and diverse organization include recording an increased workplace collaboration, reduced turnover, stronger brand identity, increased profits, and higher employee engagement. According to study by the McKinsey & Company, it was discovered that organizations with inclusive and diverse workplaces were 43% more likely to boost higher profits than those that do not embrace inclusion and diversity (Bernstein, Bulger, Salipante, & Weisinger, 2020). As such, there is need to promote inclusion and diversity in your team and I recommend that as a leader you:
* Teach team members to stay aware of unconscious biases – in order to fully address the issue of inclusion and diversity there is need to first understand bias and build awareness. Unconscious biases kill the efficiency of a team without anyone realizing it. unconscious biases are common in the workplace and especially among teams. Some common unconscious biases are gender bias, ageism, affinity bias, beauty bias, conformity bias, halo/horns effect, name bias, weight bias, and contrast effect. These biases are not normal and should never be encouraged in a team (Hayes, Oltman, Kaylor, & Belgudri, 2020). As a leader, it is important to address the issue of unconscious biases by helping team members understand the impacts of unconscious biases on other members. One approach to address unconscious biases is to teach members how top review, question, and analyze individual biases and assumptions. Where possible record such biases as they occur and use them to teach team members how to make biases conscious and replace the negative ones with positive ones.
