The CNS functions through the brain and the spinal cord to regulate the body's functions and enable an adaption to the environment. The CNS primarily receives, processes, and gives a response to sensory stimuli. The peripheral nervous system is divided into a somatic, autonomic, and an enteric division.
The brain is a hemispherical organ with two cerebral hemispheres and the cerebellum. The thin outer cortical layer consists of grey matter, which is densely packed with neurons, and the white matter below it, which has pathways connecting different grey areas through myelinated fibre strands. It functions to respond, sense, direct movement, control emotions, coordinate communication, thought processes, and memory (Thau et al., 2022). The skull bone protects it, the meninges membranes, and the cerebrospinal fluid found in the subarachnoid space. The brain is an organ of nervous tissue and is subject to damage by small forces or trauma. To prevent harmful substances from getting to the brain through the blood, there is a blood-brain barrier. The brain is split into two hemispheres, left and right, with constant communication and control of behaviour. The left hemisphere is dominant for most individuals and controls language, mathematical abilities, and logic. The right is more creative and dominant in artistic and musical circumstances.
