Differentiate the microscopic morphology of staphylococci and streptococci as seen by Gram stain.
Staphylococci can be identified as groups of spherical cells (cocci) when observed under a Gram stain. Their arrangement patterns tend to vary. Staphylococci are characterized by their Gram-positive nature and are often found in clusters that resemble grapes (Jenul & Horswill, 2019). In contrast, Streptococci are also Gram-positive cocci but tend to form chains or pairs. When observed, Streptococci can be seen as long chains of cells arranged in a linear fashion (Jenul & Horswill, 2019). It is important to note that Gram-positive cocci include Staphylococcus, which is catalase-positive. It grows clusters. On the other hand, Streptococcus, which is catalase-negative, grows in grains.
What are the two types of staphylococcal coagulase?
The two types of bound coagulase-clumping factor (slide) and free coagulase–extracellular coagulase (tube). Staphylococcal coagulase is present in two distinct forms: bound coagulase and free coagulase. Bound coagulase, known as the clumping factor, is firmly attached to the bacterium's cell wall. On the other hand, free coagulase is released by the bacterium into the surrounding medium (Jenul & Horswill, 2019).
