What strikes me as especially relevant in the founding and development of the bioethics field relates to how it transformed medical ethics into bioethics. A paradigm shift in healthcare practice started in the United States (U.S.) and spread to other countries. In the pre-World War II era, physicians predominantly guided and conducted research and discourses about ethics in healthcare practice. It would be viewed as uncalled for when a theologian or philosopher offered insights to medical practitioners concerning how to conduct their duties. In the postwar era, medical research advanced in dimensions that triggered public outcry and acclamation. This is because interventions traditionally viewed as innovative – including mechanical ventilation, genetic engineering, transplantation, and dialysis – were instantly considered as provoking complex questions concerning the sanctity and value of life.
