Cole, (2018) focused on the manner that the loss of biodiversity can lead to the increased risks of diseases. The author highlighted hat biodiversity loss is occurring in numerous ecosystems globally. There have been numerous discussions among researchers concerning whether this issue can be positively or negatively connected to an elevation in wildlife disease transmission and risk and therefore, this may be due to the amplification or dilution effect.
The article clearly highlighted that biodiversity is rapidly disappearing as infectious diseases spill over from wildlife to humans (Cole, 2018). Therefore, most experts in this field are still researching on whether losing biodiversity will lead to an increased threat on humans in contracting diseases.
Relation of the article to biology
This article is essential as it highlights numerous studies carried out to determine the manner that biodiversity loss is associated to the increased risk of people becoming ill. It also indicated that the dilution effect is the process whereby a more diverse community of some species can reduce the risk of infections (Cole, 2018). If this effect becomes widespread, preserving biodiversity will be highly beneficial for conservation of animals and human health.
