Response to Film Clips: Women Activism through Literary Works
In the recent years, women have participated actively in championing for social, economic, and political sanity within society. In early days, men undermined women position in society and this forced women to device ways through which they could speak out their concerns to the society. Feminists movements resonated through various venues and these include literary works (Slagle, 2012). In the late 1900s, various women such as Grace Paley and Tillie Olsen, among others, came out as female activists, who adopted literature as the means through which to make their voices heard, pertaining to injustices in the society of the time (Derek, 2013). As demonstrated in the short clips of the two female writers, women are concerned about the happenings in the world such as wars, hunger, rape cases, and economic injustices for instance, too much taxes imposed on citizens (GracePaleyVideo, n.d).
For many years, women have kept quiet about such issues of concern because they lacked the attention of society, where they could address the concerns (Ramdani, 2013). Political world was not the place for women. As a woman, one could just watch the appalling happenings in society, without the ability to intervene in any way. With the rising cases of political injustices experienced in the world, women are now actively fighting for a better society, more than ever (DeAnne et al., 2014). The pain, in their hearts, of losing children through wars, subjection to injustice legal systems and subjection to ruthless political and economic policies such as high taxes and poor working conditions, have awakened women to fight for the future of their children (The Tillie Olsen Film Project, 2014). Today, women have the taken center stage in condemning all forms of injustice in society, and this is demonstrated through their literary works besides active activism movements, all over the world. More women need to rise and join others in fueling campaigns that would bring sanity back in society, for the well-being of tomorrow (Banerjee and Duflo, 2008).
