Dramatic Film Score
A film score in an original song composed for a film. Examples of these parallel scoring are mickey mousing and leitmotif. In animation and film music, the term "Mickey Mousing" is a beloved nickname used to describe a method in which the music and the action on the screen are perfectly synced. This method is known as "Mickey Mousing" since it was originally featured in the 1928 Mickey Mouse cartoon Steamboat Willie. The invention of "Mickey Mousing" was made possible by the desire of all film companies to boast about the inclusion of sound in their productions once they discovered the secret to creating sound-enhanced movies (Audissino, 2020). To that goal, many films' soundtracks were excessively timed to the action on screen, and the early Disney cartoons were no exception. In this paper, we will discuss aspects around mickey mousing and leitmotif, their significance to visual content, and explain a moving image that employed the style.
Mickey Mousing
Mickey Mousing and synchronization offer structure to the watching experience, signaling how much the viewer should be affected by occurrences and providing information that is not shown on screen. The approach makes it possible for the music to be perceived as participating in the action, swiftly and effectively understood, and further enhances the viewer's experience of the scenario (Audissino, 2020). Mickey Mousing may also be employed in parody, self-reference, and accidental humor. The animated motion is frequently timed to the music rather than the other way around. It is also particularly true whether it is classical music or another well-known composition. In these scenarios, the music for the animation is pre-recorded, and the animator may time the movements appropriately by using an exposure sheet with the beats noted on it, frame by frame.
The phrase "Mickey Mousing" is sometimes used pejoratively to suggest that a method utilized in adult-targeted works is overly simple and better suited for a younger audience. Melodrama is another term for the method. The method is criticized for visual action that, without justification, is repeated in the music or text accompanying it, making it a production flaw rather than a strength. Creators have noted that many cartoon musicians are more focused on precise synchronization or "Mickey-Mousing" than on the uniqueness of their contribution or the variety of their arrangement. Mickey Mousing was dubbed the most impolite cinematic music style by Jean Cocteau in 1954. Hanns Eisler called Mickey Mousing's art style; this horrible Wagnerian illustration method in 1958. An orchestra member starts to bark whenever they mention a dog (Kim, 2020). For love, we have the divisi violins in E Major. It is intolerable.
Leitmotif
A leitmotif, or recurring melody, is a musical device used to symbolize a character, feeling, location, or topic. Leitmotivs, derived from German, was made popular by the German composer Richard Wagner and were mainly employed in opera throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. These musical themes are currently most frequently heard in the scores for movies and television shows, and John Williams' music is frequently associated with them. Some of the leitmotifs that are the simplest to recognize are superhero themes. In Rhapsody Rabbit, the leitmotif is seen in the song Hungarian Rhapsody No 2, which Bug plays. Think of any superhero or villain as a thought exercise (Rahn, 2021). However, just a tiny portion of creating a distinctive leitmotif lies with the composer. The intention might be lost in translation if the director, editors, and composer are not on the same page.
Max Steiner (1888-1971)
To avoid being interned in Germany during World War I, Austrian composer and conductor Maximilian Raoul Steiner escaped to England. He then immigrated to America in 1914 and rose to fame as a renowned composer for theater and motion pictures. He was a child prodigy who directed his first operetta at twelve (The Editors of Encyclopedi...
