Crimes of the Heart, written by Beth Henley, is a classic comic tragedy about three sisters Lenny, Meg, and Babe. The sisters try to deal with the problem before them; Babe just shot her husband because she never likes his looks. They have life problems to deal with too; their father just left home and their mother hung herself. The actors in the play were brilliant to say the least. Throughout the play, they show a connection and a chemistry that makes them work together to leave viewers with lasting impression.
The actors in the play were impressively versatile. The performance was always great and the cast was able to draw humor even in difficult situations. The awareness of when to add comedy in the play was brilliant. When Babe is asked why she shot her husband, she says that “it was because she never liked his looks”. In reality, no one can shoot a person because they do not like their looks. One should at least have a solid reason for committing a heinous crime such as murder. And yet, the reply is not meant in bad faith. Normally, talking about issues like murder one should be serious with no jokes. That Babe still finds it in her to joke about it would captivate the audience. It is this deviation from reality to a world of oblivion that makes theatre such unique. Chick turned out to play the part of the villain brilliantly. Porter was in small parts that never required any real laughs. These parts helped add somber mood to the play, helping viewers to stay focused all through. The playwright also did a great job adding some minute but important details in the play. For example, when the phone was dropped.
The design of the lighting of the play changed well with various scenes and moods. The lighting played an important role in taking characters into the limits they needed to be in.
The other characters in the play give the viewers the chance they need to deviate from the tragedies of the sisters and keep the plot smooth. The actors were well capable and delivered a performance worthy of watching. The efforts of the production team gave the drama finesse. It was brilliant to set the play in MaGrath household. The director has effectively directed the play and was able to bring out the actresses such as Carolyn Droscoski as Lenny, Terri Calise as Cousin Chick, Marci Bing as Meg and Carrie Gordon as Babe who are very familiar to the audience. Their outstanding performance in previous plays have brought them out as worthy character who the director has used to bring out the enormous amount of energy that they possess and the physical manifestation of their roles which include pouting, giggling and hip swivelling (Leah, 1985).
The characters used in the play helped achieve the primary aim of the playwright. Viewers can connect with this production and remember it for characters, their good performances, their humor, and how they resonated with the truth. This was a warm-hearted play that the playwright used to show how the passions of the three sisters betrayed them. The story has a lot of humor and humanity that tells the story of how the family is handling their past. The characters struggle to deal with the desperate situations, their loneliness and failures; they still manage to find happiness in their lives even if momentarily. If there is any reason for any viewer to have faith in theaters to give them the best quality, then this play can prove a capable motivation.
