MUS115 - Concert Response Paper. Visual & Performing Arts Essay
There will be three different playlists / “concerts” will be created that you may watch /
listen to as a substitution for the original assignment. These will be included in the “Concert
Response Paper – Submissions” tab on UBLearns. Each one centers around a theme.
After listening your playlist, write one three to four (3-4) page paper, commenting upon various
aspects related to the music. Please write a coherent, clear essay with paragraphs and organized
thoughts. You are permitted to use the first-person in writing if you feel that will help you. Take
care to answer all of the prompting questions (see next page). It would be wise to begin writing
almost as soon as the playlist is over so that the experience of the first listening is still fresh in your
mind.

Change quite clearly is inevitable, and the only way through it is by adaptation. The COVID-19 crisis has been the biggest disruptor in the year 2020, necessitating a change in most areas of our lives. The much-anticipated concerts, for example, usually held at UB, have all been rendered impossible. As a result, a shift has to be made from the physical, more interactive concerts to online concerts with everyone miles apart from one another. In this concert paper, I particularly went with the dance playlist to help cheer up the mood considering that most of the time, under the current situation, is now spent indoors. This particular playlist consisted of 10 different pieces by different singers. The ones that largely caught my attention were "Offenbach" by Lukas Schuch, "Chopin Mazurka" by Markiash, and Camille Saint "by Distant mirrors.
Other performances in this concert included "The Jacksons- Blame it on the boogie," "Sarah Foster- you cannot stop the beat," "Deviantrake-witches DanceWitchesBoss Wolf 100- the rocky horror picture show.". All these were stylistically distinct pieces that enabled listeners and viewers to experience and engage in different dance dimensions. Dance in Itself is an intricate form of art that requires music, through which selected forms and sequences of human motion are brought forth, to the satisfaction of both the performers and the audience(Tylor, 2014). Consequently, dance can be performed to satisfy various settings, such as social functions, competition, and choreography. This particular playlist seemed to encompass all these different needs in its various performances, therefore having the ability to satisfy audiences in many settings.
Most of the performances in the playlist can be classified as classical music. A variation is in the "Fall out boy" and "Blame it on the Boogie," which are electronic compositions. The major instruments used in the concert were the violin, the piano, and the cello. The harmony in which these instruments were used, especially in "You cannot stop the beat," almost immediately made one want to jump right into the dance floor. It made me particularly miss the days when we could freely go out to dinner parties and dance before the COVID pandemic. In "blame it on the Boogie," the ensemble did a good job in ensuring that their interaction, persona, tempo, and intonation all went in harmony to ensure that the audience felt as if they were indeed dancing and swiveling in the moonlight themselves.
