Can Nestlé Lead in Eliminating Modern Slavery from Supply Chains?

Nestlé, a global food and beverage giant, faces intense scrutiny for modern slavery, particularly child labor, in its cocoa and seafood supply chains. The 2019 case study by Syeda Maseeha Qumer examines Nestlé’s efforts through initiatives like the Nestlé Cocoa Plan (TNCP) and Human Rights Due Diligence Program. Using SWOT and PESTEL analyses, this paper argues that Nestlé has the potential to lead in eliminating modern slavery but must overcome systemic challenges to achieve meaningful reform.

SWOT Analysis: Nestlé’s Internal and External Position

Strengths: Having such a strong presence in a global market and all the resources, nestlé can initiate industry-wide change. Since 2009, the TNCP has been active with the International Cocoa Initiative, helping to support and establish sustainable cocoa cultivation and child labor combat by sourcing around 140,933 tonnes of cocoa in 2016, aiming to reach 230,000 tonnes by 2020. Human Rights Due Diligence Program, where 96,599 workers will be trained by 2018, proves respect for ethics. Alliances with the Fair Labor Association contribute to credibility and checking.
