Student Tutor Course Date Reflexive Research Project Step 1: Ethnic Identity Ethnic identity and race are some of the most notable hot-button topics considering how they affect people throughout their development from childhood to adulthood. Partly, ethnic identity and issues like race are central in defining contemporary societal discourse in multicultural countries like the US (King and Cyrus, 71). Ethnic identity could imply a person’s connection to a particular ethnic group. Often, ethnic identity is gauged on many bases including shared ancestry, language, or culture. Race is a sub-unit of ethnic identity that encompasses the specific elements of connection among people such as physical traits or the skin colors of the individuals. Presently, the media plays a central role in highlighting issues stemming from ethnic identity and race (Akande 93). Through the media, one can be equipped with the need to celebrate diversity while also highlighting the associated challenges such as systemic racism. In this reflexive research project, focusing on ethnic identity and racism is stimulated by the pervasive impacts of such topics on individuals and communities. What Makes/Does Not Make Sense The media bears a range of prospects that make sense when it comes to understanding ethnic identity and racism even though there are prospects that still do not make sense. First among the prospects that make sense in the media is the motivation to promote cultural diversity and inclusion (Akande 133). The media has taken a primary role in celebrating different ethnicities. Such a move enriches those cultures as well as societies by extension as they stimulate mutual respect and value for all cultures.
