The Effect of the Abyssinian Crisis on the League of Nations
The Abyssinia, former name of now Ethiopia, had fallen under the Italian empire’s ruling in 1935 when they had an encounter over a border crisis (Flinn and Gidon). The latter had once attempted to dominate Abbysania only to be humiliated by defeat in the late 1890s. The success of Italy in conquering Abbysania led to the Abbysanian crisis. Haile Selassie, the country’s emperor, went into exile while Benito Mussolini appointed new leaders.
The Abyssinian crisis contributed to the revelation that the nation’s league lacked power if not for its members’ strong nations. League of Nations attempted to avoid another world war and conflict between nations through peace talks and agreements (Corbett).
