Bring your manual to class or be prepared to share it on your screen if the manual is online. We will be comparing manuals to one another. Your job is to be the one in the room who knows your book best. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. Read the introduction. 1. Who publishes it and what is the publication date (is this the latest publication)? 2. What is their goal? In other words, what need are they addressing in this Manual of Worship? OR What void are they filling? 3. Structure. Note the basic structure of the book. What structure does the book follow? How deeply does the manual enter into the Church Year? The life cycle? The Scriptures? Some of these questions will be addressed in the next section as well. Prayers, readings and psalms. 1. Does it offer prayers for use in various services? 2. What about proposed Scripture readings? 3. Is the Psalter included? 4. Diversity. 5. How does this manual address alternate ways of observing sacraments, rites, and other services, from an ecumenical standpoint (baby dedications, blessings of infants, various Eucharistic practices, etc.)? 6. Is the language updated for gender inclusion, for example, or other linguistic changes from the past 50 years? 7. Does it take into account alternate language related to gender/sexuality, and how does it (for example) treat singleness as a viable Christian path? Special Services. 1.
