For this discussion, describe key differences between formal group therapy in a treatment setting and support groups found in the community (such as Alcoholics Anonymous). What client characteristics or preferences are appropriate to consider before making referrals to support groups in the community? Provide an example of a client objection that may better addressed by an alternative to traditional twelve-step support groups and present a rationale for a support group that may be a better fit.
• Strategies for Group Leaders
Group therapy in any setting may include a diverse group of clients. This can be even more common in groups focused on addictions, given the breadth of community members who may be impacted. Describe key strategies that a group leader would be wise to consider in leading an addictions group where members may initially appear to have little in common aside from their addiction.
• Educational Achievement Gaps
While considering the resources you have read about the educational achievement gap, use three conclusions from the research that inform a potential career counselor about possible causes for the educational achievement gap. Whether you are working with children directly or not, articulate how this information is vital for career counselors to understand and address as it relates to career and educational planning, placement, and even evaluation. Finally, explain career development as an integral subset of human development.
For example, you might say, "Recent research has shown that there are many potential reasons for the disparity between racial groups. A review by Farkas (2003) has actually shown that the difference has to do with social background, or economic reasons, rather than race, per se." and so on.
• Career Counseling Across the Lifespan
From the framework of your readings and articles, synthesize your understanding and then justify career counseling across the lifespan. State what really struck you after reading the article, and identify the influence that career counseling can have when working with children, adolescents, and adults. How does the developmental lifespan perspective influence career and educational planning, placement, and evaluation? How did Frank Parsons influence the world of career counseling?

Role of Support Groups for Addictions
According to Schiff and Bargal (2000), formal group therapy in a treatment setting is where treatment options are offered and guided by trained professionals. In a group therapy, clients come together in a session and are led or guided by a professional. On the other hand, support groups found in the community such as Alcoholics Anonymous are less structured and so they are open-ended. In this case, a group of people who have a common issue come together to help each other. Instead of having a trained professional, support groups allow members to share among each other and in so doing, they help each other (Schiff & Bargal, 2000). Support groups are suitable for clients who have issues that do not need psychotherapy such as when one needs to stop drinking and requires friends for support. The other characteristic is that the client should have a similar issue to the people in the group one wishes to join (Schiff & Bargal, 2000). However, a client who makes excuses for his/her drinking and is in denial when it comes to viewing oneself as an alcoholic despite staying isolated from social networks, needs an alternative to the traditional twelve-step support group. This individual may require a support group such as that for people with depression because of staying isolated and needs a professional to show him/her that one is an addict (Schiff & Bargal, 2000).
Strategies for Group Leaders
Jacobs, Masson, Harvill and Schimmel (2011) claim, that the strategy that a group leader should use when dealing with addicts with little in common is engaging the team to have a shared vision. This means the leader should come up with a strategy that inspires the group to follow despite their different personalities. When the group is inspired, they will be committed to deal with their issues despite their differing characteristics or personalities. The other strategy is for the leader to embrace problem-solving skills. Problem-solving involves finding solutions for difficult or complicated issues such as dealing with addicts with varied problems or characteristics. A leader with problem-solving skills is able to come up with a plan to handle the varied characteristics of the addicts and find a solution on how to bring them together to deal with their issues. Finally, the other strategy is for the leader to work on one-on-one relationships within the team. The idea is for the leader to pay close attention to the cues each member conveys and spend time with each of them to recognize their concerns, as well as motivations. One-on-one relationships help the team leader to gauge the various characteristics of each individual and find a way to bring them together for the betterment of the entire group (Jacobs, Masson, Harvill & Schimmel, 2011).
