Degeneracy is the ability of the brain to produce the same emotional experience with a different axiom or set of neural roads/wiring. It implies that there is no single part of the brain that is identified to be involved in one particular feeling. Rather, feelings are the product of permeable and plastic interactions of brain systems, which may differ between individuals and contexts as well. Lindquist et al. (2012) affirm that the notion of degeneracy is a key factor to understand since it demonstrates how emotions activity originates through distributed neural networks and not independent emotion centers, as proposed in the psychological constructionist model. Why does allostasis require having a brain capable of prediction? Allostasis refers to the process whereby the body sustains stability by evolving, so that the internal operations remain consistent to balance the changes in requirements. To do this effectively, the brain needs to have the capacity to anticipate future needs of the body and not merely respond to them. According to Lindquist et al.
