Academic research aims at bringing knowledge gaps by explaining societal problems. It uses qualitative, quantitative, or a mixture of the two methodologies while sourcing for informed information to address a certain issue. In academic research, one has to look for specific characteristics of quantitative and qualitative studies before deciding to use them. For example, quantitative research is best when opinions, behaviors, and attitudes need to be quantified and represented in numerical forms. Also, when research is not new but needs additional information to reinforce the existing knowledge, quantitative sources would be best. On the other hand, qualitative sources are vital in interpretive cases that try to decode, describe and translate phenomena (Basias & Pollalis, 2018).
