Tanya’s Terrific Ts



Tanya is a student at North West Community College. The college is located in a part of town that is a residential community. Tanya is doing a business degree with a focus on entrepreneurship. Tanya has been thinking about starting a business and is looking at options. One business idea that has come to mind is a t-shirt company that allows her to personalize the shirts. She can get plain t-shirts from a wholesaler for a base price of $4.50 per shirt if she orders in bulk. She can then do personalized printing. She has access to a website that she can pull images of Disney characters, Starwars, the college logo and other movies and current trends so she can make the shirts appealing and more sought after. She opened up in November and was surprised that she sold 1,000 shirts (300 to a student program at the school and the remainder was for personalized gifts purchased by students, faculty, staff and general customers. Tanya is excited that it was so popular.







She has found a place where she can set up her shop at a local small mall near the college because she thinks that she university students will be a good audience. The fixed costs are $42,000 per year which includes rent, equipment purchase, utilities and insurance and can be spread out over a year (12 equal payments). The variable costs such as lettering and advertising might make up $2 per shirt. She is looking to sell the shirts for $12 each.



Tanya has had some money in savings and recently inherited some funds from an uncle that passed away. She can use this towards the business to get it started.



What are your recommendations for Tanya after doing a break even analysis and what are some of the issues she should consider?
