American Sign Language Name Institution Course and Code Professor Date American Sign Language Movie title: “Love Is Never Silent (1985).” Date when you watched it: 1st December 2024. Summarize the details of the storyline in a brief summary: The storyline of “Love Is Never Silent (1985)” is about a young lady, Margaret Ryder (Mare Winningham), who is responsible for helping her deaf parents to communicate with the hearing world (Sargent, 1985). Since she was a girl, Ryder has always been there for her family, especially after the death of her brother. She finds it difficult to build her life because she feels bad leaving her deaf parents. Write your reaction to what you watched: The movie was very interesting and touched my heart. I found myself crying several times because of the struggles that Ryder’s family was going through. Ryder went through a lot as a young girl since she was always there to represent her deaf parents. Since she understood sign language, Ryder facilitated communication for her parents, who would have been misunderstood by the hearing world. A surprising moment: The most surprising moment in this film is when Ryder loses her brother, who falls from the balcony of their house. During this moment, the family experienced several tragedies, including the death of Ryder’s brother and the machine that her mother used being taken away (Sargent, 1985). What was a Deaf Gain moment in the movie? The deaf gain moment was when Ryder used sign language to tell her parents that the person who was selling them a casket asked, “What kind of people are you?” What hit home for you? An AH moment: I was hit by the moment Ryder was carried away by her thoughts during the funeral of her brother. Indeed, it was from this moment that she realized that she was the only voice of her family. How did this movie impact you? “Love Is Never Silent” has taught me the importance of the sign language. By looking at how Ryder represented her deaf parents by interpreting speaking sign language, it touched me to see how she helped them to be part of the hearing world.
