1 Why was there a German-British rivalry over a railway in Kuwait?
Initially, Germany sought to establish a port in Basrah. However, German engineers discovered that the silting under the Tigris-Euphrates river system would lead to a costly and non-ending dredging operation. Therefore, they went looking for a better alternative and found one in the Kuwait Bay. After German ships docked in the Kuwait Bay, the cargo would be placed in railcars headed for Germany, hence the need to build a railway in Kuwait. Still, a German railway in Kuwait was a threat to British commercial interests. At first, Britain had responded by trying to exact power over Kuwait. This response was initiated by Germany’s original plans in Basrah. However, when Germany started talks with Kuwait’s leadership, Britain sought out a new ally in the Ottoman Empire.
