Compromise of 1877
The compromise of 1877 marks a historical time in the U.S. that has had a significant impact on continued white supremacists in the nation. According to Clarke (2018), although the concessions enabled the country to resolve the 1876 contested presidential results involving Hayes and Tilden, it also frustrated the rising positive racial revolution within the southern states. As a result, the author agrees that this compromise determined the foundation of the divisive racial relations in the United States for nearly a decade. For instance, the withdrawal of federal officers in these regions and the reversal of power to the Democratic Party rescinded the efforts towards individual rights protection against the white supremacy movements (Clarke, 2018). Thus, while the compromise may have settled an election issue, it worsened the racial divide.
Homestead Act- 1862
The Homestead Act remains a historically significant law because of its impact on racial relations and land distribution in the U.S. It provided free land to European immigrants while denying other racial groups a similar opportunity. For instance, this act allowed the Whites to rob American Indians of their ancestral fields, as the whites allocated themselves vast lands in the American West unimpeded. The government aided this invasion further by providing military protection to these homesteaders as they invaded these regions (Clarke, 2018). These events triggered widespread racial animosity between the Whites and the other discriminated races. The consequences of this event remain even in the contemporary era through the sensitive racial relations in the country.
The Jungle
The Jungle represents Upton Singclair’s exposure to food manufacturing and packaging in the United States. Wesley et al. (2021) indicate that the researcher highlighted the deplorable and inhumane working conditions within the meat packaging sector. He also revealed that the unsanitary handling of such a sensitive food could trigger widespread diseases in humans. This exposure triggered a viral public outcry, drawing the attention of many legislators. Wesley et al. (2021) report that Congress passed the 1906 “Pure Food and Drug Act” following this outrage to protect consumers. Its enactment has remained influential in shaping the food industry within the U.S. through its emphasis on ingredient labeling, dosage, and other safety measures.
