Reflection: Mental Health Care Author’s Name The Institutional Affiliation Course Number and Name Instructor Name Assignment Due Date Introduction The Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013–2030 is an initiative taken by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a specialized agency of the United Nations to improve mental health care systems globally. It is a comprehensive and coordinated plan that offers strategies to treat, prevent, and promote the mental well-being of every individual across the globe (Mental Health Report, 2022; Faria et al., 2023). This reflection discusses the actions I can take to improve mental health care outcomes for people with whom I currently work. It is primarily based on two fundamental principles: universal health coverage and a life course approach. Universal Health Coverage Universal health coverage is the core principle of a comprehensive mental health action plan, which emphasizes providing mental health care services to all people across the globe as a primary care system (World Health Organization, 2023). The plan is to ensure the accessibility of the services to every individual through its integration into the health care system, which makes it available at the community level. Universal health coverage concentrates on the awareness of mental health issues, diagnosis, treatment, and therapy (Koohpayezadeh et al., 2021). The key aspects of universal health coverage include the affordability of quality mental health care services and accessibility to a full range of services irrespective of global location, financial status, and cultural constraints. Universal health coverage encounters several challenges. Based on my interaction with the people I work with, I can take specific actions to improve mental health care outcomes. I find it beneficial to collaborate with general health care providers to make mental health care part of a routine general health care checkup, making it possible for the patient to receive adequate care and health care providers to diagnose and treat the issue early. The training programs for the healthcare staff are another critical action that can help in the prompt treatment of patients and eliminate the stigma attached to mental health. One of the most significant challenges is the accessibility to mental health services due to geographical barriers.
