The role of the government in building a healthy society is to finance and regulate healthcare systems. The government should ensure that local, state, and federal healthcare facilities are adequately equipped to handle common healthcare conditions. It should also empower caregivers through support and resources to facilitate preventive measures. Various departments of the federal government should also engage in functions relating to disease control, sanitation, and health monitoring. The government must deliver and finance personal health services, like direct delivery, mental health, and Medicaid. Meeting these duties calls for the government to constantly devise policies that support the uninsured to get insurance coverage. For example, a past regime in the U.S. created Medicaid and Medicare to increase the number of insured individuals. Government has to review healthcare insurance coverage data, track relevant trends, and develop interventions to ensure that the uninsured have access to care and are facilitated to get coverage.
Following the above reflection, I agree with Hubert H. Humphrey's statement that a government's moral test lies in treating vulnerable groups of people with disabilities, the needy, sick people, the elderly, and children. Unfortunately, these individuals disproportionately have limited access to care compared to other groups. For example, many uninsured people are needy and poor (Garfield et al., 2020). A government that fails to initiate a conversation regarding how well to support these vulnerable groups is immoral.
