To identify the impact of nurses in diagnosing urine culture stewardship in medical facilities.

A quasi-experimental design was adopted for the research.

* What are the impacts of nurse-driven urine culture diagnostic stewardship on patient health outcomes?
* What is the level of efficiency attributed to nurse-driven diagnostics of urine culture reflex?

* To reduce the case number of urinary culture conditions by incorporating nurse-driven diagnostics.

The study was carried out in John Hopkins hospital with a bed capacity of 1194. The study utilized 24 beds occupied by adult patients. A group of 27 hospitalists and 37 nurses were used in the study.

Dependent: number of catheter related UTI cases.Independent: Number of patients

* The incorporation of the intervention study led to UrCx rates moving from 0.83 to 0.71. This represented a decrease in the urinary culture reflex conditions. In addition, there were 33.9% fewer cases with the introduction of UrCx intervention. Readmission cases related to UrCx were also reduced in the hospitals.

The results can be deemed to be valid. The study incorporated different hospitals and medical practitioners during the 12-month intervention period and thus were able to study patient conditions comprehensively, noticing the reduction in the cases where nurses were able to diagnose the urinary culture reflex early.


What were the results of the study?
The intervention study led to a decrease in patients with urinary culture problems from 2.3% to 1.52%. Additionally, it increased the confidence levels of nurses from 1.22 to 1.84


How will the results assist me and/or my colleagues in improving clinical practice?
The intervention study result will enable nurses to easily identify urinary culture reflex patients and recommend the right treatment procedures. Additionally, the results will enable nurses to put more consideration on patients with the condition due to the newly acquired skills resulting in better patient health outcomes.
