Alkanes are compounds with a single covalent bond and contain carbon and hydrogen atoms. The groups with carbon and hydrogen atoms with a single covalent bond are known as saturated hydrocarbons. Alkenes are hydrocarbon bonds with a carbon-carbon double bond. They are ordinary families of hydrocarbons found in crude oil, and their double bond is substantial to the chemistry of the family’s compound. Lastly, alkynes are hydrocarbon bonds with a carbon-carbon triple bond.
Cis-isomer occurs when two similar atoms are on the same side of a double bond. They have a high boiling point due to strong intermolecular bonds. On the flip side, trans-isomers occur when two similar atoms are on the opposite side of a double bond. They have a low boiling point since the molecules are non-polar despite a charge separation.
An eye’s rod cells have two isomers of the rhodopsin, which are sensitive to light. They have different cis-trans configurations on the C11-C12 double bond. Isomerization on the C11-C12 bond in rhodopsin occurs when light strikes the rod cells (Silberman, 2022). Isomerism leads to dramatic changes in shape after rhodopsin is converted to meta-rhodopsin.
