NMHCs and an increase in the demand for healthcare
Nurse-managed health centers (NMHCs) provide services to underserved urban and rural areas in the US. Several studies reveal that NMHCs are more effective than normal healthcare facilities and can reduce the cost of healthcare if they operate at full capacity (Hansen-Turon, 2010; Barkauskas, 2011). The Affordable Care Act has increased the demand for primary care services by increasing the number of insured Americans. Regardless of whether the Act will survive political debate, the number of people seeking primary healthcare in the country will increase by 30 million by 2025 (Auerbach et al., 2013). This increase will likely make access to healthcare a problem because of the inadequate availability of healthcare facilities and healthcare providers. As a result, the time is ripe to establish more NMHCs across the country as a means of expanding the provision of healthcare.
