MHA 550 CASE MODULE 1 THE FINANCING OF HEALTH CARE IN THE UNITED STATES

Coursework Instructions:
THE FINANCING OF HEALTH CARE IN THE UNITED STATES Assignment Overview What’s the importance of health insurance? No one plans to get sick or hurt, but most people need to access health care services at some point in their lives. Health insurance status in the United States is varied and inconsistent – and it is changing over time. Critics argue both in favor of or against universal coverage, citing both benefits and drawbacks of coverages and their associated costs. Assessing the impact of health insurance coverage on a person’s health is complex; health effects may take a long time to be realized, can vary based on insurance benefits/lack thereof, and are often clouded by confounding variables. Let’s begin our Case by examining the purposes of health insurance, the current health insurance status of the U.S.population, and what current research tells us regarding the use vs. outcomes of health insurance coverage. Case Assignment Using the information in the required readings, as well as some additional research in peer-reviewed sources, complete your Case assignment by addressing the following: Articulate the specific purposes of health insurance. Provide a summary of the current health insurance status of the U.S. population. Who is covered, and by what type of insurance? What portion of the population is uninsured and underinsured? What are the trends in coverages over time? Explain how health insurance coverage affects health care utilization, disease treatment and outcomes, self-reported health, and mortality. Assignment Expectations Conduct additional research to gather sufficient information to support your analysis. Provide a response of 3-5 pages, not including title page and references. There are multiple required items to be addressed herein; please use subheadings to show where you are responding to each required item and to ensure that none are omitted. According to Hanson et al. (2023), diverse coverage schemes offer individuals varied packages based on their eligibility and economic capacity to pay for the premiums. As a result, the nation’s insurance sector offers its citizens diverse options, with some being public while others are private-based plans. Their presence demonstrates the importance of health insurance coverage in ensuring individuals receive desirable health services. In this context, this paper examines the purpose of health insurance, the U.S. population coverage status, and the impact of these plans on treatment and health outcomes. Specific Purposes of Health Insurance Health insurance has demonstrated its fundamental role in the current U.S. health system. Dey and Bach (2019) indicate that it serves the primary goal of ensuring Americans remain healthy by accessing appropriate care when sick. The author outlines six other critical functions that these plans accomplish. For instance, they offer financial caution during tragic health situations. Dey and Bach (2019) confirm that such events are unpredictable and have significantly high expenses. Insurance covers meet such costs and cap out-of-pocket costs, protecting patients from financial crises. They also assist patients in avoiding routine healthcare-related fees when visiting their physicians for checkups, medication refills, or well-child visits. According to Dey and Bach (2019), enrolling in health insurance enables patients to benefit from the discounts negotiated by their health insurers. As a result, they receive quality care at lower rates due to the consolidation that boosts negotiation position. The authors further highlight the quality rating and monitoring of hospitals by insurers that lead to improved quality of care through well-vetted facilities and clinicians (Dey & Bach, 2019). In this context, the insured only chooses services from approved professionals based on their needs. Other purposes include attractive packages encouraging individuals to embrace healthy lifestyles by providing reduced premiums. Thus, health insurance plays varied roles in the healthcare system.
