My practice is guided by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) health delivery systems competency that focuses on the use of knowledge of complicated systems to enhance the provision of healthcare, safety, collaboration, and access by diverse populations (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2022). This paper describes how I have begun to apply this competency in clinical practice, academic learning, and professional engagement. These examples demonstrate my development as a clinician and as a representative of women's health. During my clinical rotations, I was embedded within women's health clinics, and I observed how unnecessary delays to scheduled appointments severely limited the opportunity for fertility counseling and prenatal counseling. To make improvements, I contacted the clinic managers and the obstetrician-gynecologist and put together a quick mini-sketch for a streamlined referral path. I established multi-disciplinary huddles, customized consents, and shared resources around patient education.
